KARACHI: During Eid-ul-Azha, health and nutrition experts have warned against overindulging in meat eating, citing health risks. They also advised those with heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol to exercise extra caution.



Afira Anees Saad, a dietitian, told Express News that while a healthy individual can consume up to 70 grammes of meat per day, meat consumption should be moderated.


Even for healthy individuals, he added, eating more beef is not a good idea; instead, mutton is preferable. He also mentioned that a lot of people consume the fat from sacrificial meat, which raises cholesterol and body fat levels.

 
Eat one serving of meat each day; they noted that this fat also raises blood pressure, which can be more risky for those who have heart disease.


According to Afira Anees Saad, age-wise, children who begin eating at 12 years old can consume 80 to 90 grammes of meat per day; children who are 22 years old and younger can consume 70 grammes of meat per day; and individuals who are older than 22 should not consume more than 65 grammes of meat per day.

A healthy individual, according to him, requires between 450 and 600 grammes of meat per week; however, those who are elderly, have high blood pressure, heart disease, or have high cholesterol should consume less meat overall. If you must eat meat, opt for fish, chicken, or mutton instead of beef, as beef raises cholesterol levels even more.


The nutritionist explained that although the people are allowed to eat meat three times a day, they are free to divide the daily allotment of 65 to 70 grammes of meat into three or four servings.

He explained that each year following Eid-ul-Azha, hospitals experience a spike in the number of patients suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol, and indigestion because people view this holiday as a feast of food and drink, with heavy meats and sweet accompaniments. They also eat all the time.

In summary, he advised citizens to consume meat, but no more than 70 grammes per day. Vegetables, salad, milk, curd, and legumes are all part of a balanced diet. will have detrimental impacts, so continue eating salads, fruits, veggies, and pulses.

A healthy amount can be consumed, however those who are elderly, have heart problems, high blood pressure, excessive uric acid, diabetes, or complain of bone pain should limit their meat intake.


He claimed that during feasts and Eid al-Adha, people frequently disregard the need of maintaining a balanced diet.

According to Dr. Umar Sultan, people should drink extra water and lemon during these days to ensure that meat digestion stays good after consumption.
